Optimizing fiber overlay video throughput

  • For broadcasters with access only to 270Mbps networks, the growing popularity of high definition poses a considerable video transport challenge. The VS901-TAx-27—part of Nevion’s Ventura product family—allows for the seamless transport of compressed HD-SDI video via JPEG 2000 over SDTI or ASI without the build-out of additional infrastructure. In addition to the outstanding video quality of JPEG 2000 compression, even after multiple compression/decompression cycles, in the SDTI solution, all available active video space in the SDTI frame is dedicated to compressed video. This allows approximately 200Mbps of bandwidth for compressed video alone. The ancillary space in the SDTI frame is used to carry all audio and ancillary data. In this case approximately 38Mbps of bandwidth is available, more than sufficient to transport four groups of AES audio.
  • Bandwidth maximization—SMPTE 305m enables use of all available bandwidth allowing up to 200Mbps for compressed video
  • Higher quality—The VS901’s JPEG 2000 compression provides higher reconstruction quality at all bit rates compared to MPEG-2 intra-frame encoding
  • Low latency—JPEG 2000 latency of 45ms compares favorably to latency from 800ms to as much as 2 seconds using MPEG-2
  • High port density—3 HD-SDI JPEG 2000 encoders in a single 1RU enclosure
  • Low power consumption—Nevion JPEG 2000 solutions consume just 20% of the power required by MPEG-2 encoders and can cost 25% – 50% that of MPEG-2 solutions
